Best Places to Visit in Costa Rica to Find Buried Treasure

Some will argue that the best places to visit in Costa Rica is everywhere in Costa Rica. But there are some who have adventure in their hearts and hope to someday find a hidden pirate treasure. Costa Rica is just the sort of place where pirates buried their stolen gems, gold chains and gold bars.

Best Place to Visit in Costa Rica

Cocos Island is also nicknamed Treasure Island. Why? Because buried treasure has been found there many times! So, if you dream of finding buried pirate treasure and want to have a look around, Cocos Island is one of the best places to visit in Costa Rica.

Cocos Island is located about 350 miles off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica and is a part of the Puntarenas Province. This island is designated as a Costa Rican National Park and only short visits are allowed. Your travels to this park must be pre-approved by the rangers and you will not be allowed to camp or stay overnight. There are many scuba tours to this island, not for treasure hunting, but to view the unique sea life of the island.

The bad news for treasure hunters is that law pertaining to Cocos Island forbids digging for treasure. However, heavy storms have been told to unbury treasure. There are rumors that park rangers were touring the island to check for storm damage and see if the wildlife was doing ok when they saw a treasure chest had been unearthed. In all, five chests were discovered that contained over $200,000,000. Unfortunately, this particular treasure story has been proven false, but other smaller treasures have been unearthed in the past hundred years, which led to a ban on digging in the 1970s.
