Cocos Island is located about 350 miles off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica and is a part of the Puntarenas Province. This island is designated as a Costa Rican National Park and only short visits are allowed. There are many scuba tours to this island, not for treasure hunting, but to view the unique sea life of the island.

The bad news for treasure hunters is that law pertaining to Cocos Island forbids digging for treasure. However, heavy storms have been told to unbury treasure. There are rumors that park rangers were touring the island to check for storm damage and see if the wildlife was doing ok when they saw a treasure chest had been unearthed. In all, five chests were discovered that contained over $200,000,000. Unfortunately, this particular treasure story has been proven false, but other smaller treasures have been unearthed in the past hundred years, which led to a ban on digging in the 1970s.
