Weather in Costa Rica Varies During the Year

The weather in Costa Rica is a little different depending on where you are going to be staying, just like most countries. There are low lying areas, mountains and two different oceans that border the country. Each has their own set of weather rules.

Costa Rica Weather

The North Pacific Coast, (that holds the popular tourist area of Playa Tamarindo), is considered to be the hot and dry area. While there is a Green Season (rainy season) this area still remains pleasantly dry between May to November. The official High Season (dry season) is December through April. The perfect year-round weather is only one of the numerous reasons this area is so popular for locals and tourists for their vacations.

The areas of Nicoya Peninsula, Central Pacific Coast and Central Valley have their High Season in December through April and their Green Season is May through November. These areas also have the same seasonal dates: Osa Pennisula & Drake Bay, San Jose Highlands, Southern Costa Rica and Rincon de la Vieja area.

Arenal Volcano and the surrounding lowlands have the High Season during May through November and the Green Season December through April.

The Monteverde area has a High Season January through May and a Green Season June through December. However, the months of November and December are known for their high winds.

February through October is the High Season for Caribbean North and Caribbean South. Their Green Season is November through August.

There are some advantages to choosing to stay in one of Costa Rica’s Green Seasons. This is the less popular time of year and everything is usually less expensive. Just take a nap during the couple hours of rain around lunchtime.
