Guanacaste Costa Rica ranks as the country’s second largest province in sheer land mass. However, it also boasts a great number of the abundant wildlife. In fact, the province is home to three wildlife preserves: Isla Bolaños National Wildlife Refuge, Lomas de Barbudal Biological Reserve and Ostional Wildlife Reserve, as well as seven national parks.
Guanacaste Costa Rica Species
Playa Langosta estuary excites hundreds of Guanacaste Costa Rica visitors each year as they witness the coming and going of a variety of turtles, including Leatherback, Pacific Green, Olive-Ridley and Hawksbill. A known nesting spot, at times up to 200 turtles can lay eggs in one night.
Birders find plenty to keep their eyes and ears busy in this region as well. Turquoise-browed Motmot, Black-headed Trogon and White-lored Gnatcatcher scatter throughout the region’s trees. Those looking for those famous Costa Rica parrots find Guanacaste’s White-Fronted Parrots flying in flocks of 30-50 during the day. This bright green parrot wears a mask of red, white and blue, with the males sporting a full red mask around their eyes.
If you haven’t gotten your fill of seeing monkeys and sloths along the region’s roadside, the publically accessible Monkey Park serves as a fantastic area resource. This refuge, which specializes in rehab and release of native species allows visitors the opportunity to witness some of their creatures currently on the property, as well as learn about the species and on-going conservations efforts. But don’t let the name fool you. In addition to monkeys, you may witness porcupines, crocodiles, owls and others receiving a little tender loving care before release.
When you visit Guanacaste Costa Rica, let Casa de Luz serve as the perfect base for your wildlife exploration. Because, while those monkeys and sloths may not sleep in the most comfortable of positions, we offer luxury among the wildlife.
