Costa Rica is full of hotels in the capital, San Jose. When you land, you’ll probably want to stay the night in San Jose and then venture farther out after a day or two. You can book hotels in advance online, but you can ask a local taxi driver for a recommendation for his expert opinion after you land.

Hotels are readily available in the popular beach communities. These hotels can be booked in advance as part of an all-inclusive tour or reserved online. There are usually plenty of rooms available in the off season, if you want to book after arriving. One particularly nice way to enjoy your stay is to rent a beach villa, like Casa de Luz. If you like to just show up and find a place to stay in beach communities, you can check with the hotels, but you can also rent like the locals do by renting a cabana. A cabana is a little room with a couple of small beds, a shower and a sink. It is for those who are more interested in beach life than luxurious accommodations and has an extremely low price to match.
