Weather in Costa Rica typically brings sunny beaches to mind. However, the country does enjoy a rainy season – and we actually mean enjoy. Unlike some destinations, rain in Costa Rica opens up a whole new adventure.
Weather in Costa Rica’s Rainy Season
The rainy weather in Costa Rica typically begins in June, with occasional peaks and breaks through the fall. Sporadic heavy storms occur, but are scattered between calm skies. Many tourists enjoy this time due to fewer crowds and discounted activities.
When the skies kick into high gear, so does much of nature. If you hope to observe Costa Rica’s famous turtle population, this is the time. Olive Ridley and Green turtles nest on beaches mid-summer through mid-Fall. The nation’s famous and endangered leatherback turtles start nesting in October.
Water sports aren’t off limits either when the rain falls. In fact, the season provides peak conditions for many. If you’re looking for thrilling river rapids excursions, you’ll love the rainy season. Lower water means slower and occasionally bumpy rides. The rainy season enhances rafting trips with a faster pace and thrilling class III and class IV rapids in many areas.
As well, many scuba diving sights offer unbeatable wildlife encounters during this time. You’ll want to avoid dives during heavy storms, but look for calm waters that open feeding opportunities for incredible underwater shows. And, quite a few shows happen above the surface as well. Storm-enhanced swells bringing professional surfers from across the globe to challenge their skills in the most exciting conditions, providing stunning athletic displays for all those on shore.
The weather in Costa Rica offers diverse riches just like the land. If you’re interested in fun beyond typical beach lounging, let our Casa de Luz staff help you plan a trip no storm can spoil.
